School 5 applies school wide instructional management system that individualizes instruction in accelerated reader, an electronic book club, advances the use of technology communication, reading, and writing links to instruction. Teachers communicate regularly with parents about expectations for quality student work, providing examples of rubrics and assignments, and communicating the grading system will include returning work to the student if it is not up to quality standard. The student will then be expected to analyze that work, with teacher help if needed, and revise it to higher quality.
Students are taught from a Rigorous Core Knowledge curriculum, values and democratic principles using technology as a tool to support literacy, critical thinking, and New York State and Yonkers Learning Standards Library contains a computer research center to support in-depth and creative instruction. The children are actively involved in extensive, hands on projects requiring the use of state of the art technology; enabling them to become productive citizens of an ever changing global society. Research-based best practices are used in reading, the writing process, mathematics, science and social studies. Reading, writing and mathematics are taught in extended blocks of time to practice and apply skills.
School 5 teachers work to awaken student’s intellectual curiosity through experiential learning; focusing on the skills needed to gather, analyze, and communicate information. School 29 computer Technologies, Foreign Language Programs, Cultural Awareness Programs, Business-Schools Partnership, Targeted Instruction and Prescriptive Diagnostic Learning Strategies, students will become aware of their responsibilities in a larger global community and will be academically prepared for a successful future.
