Yonkers Middle School houses grades sixth through twelve and its education cornerstone is the International Baccalaureate Programme. Traditional school subjects are taught with a focus on global citizenship, inquiry learning and thematic interdisciplinary units. Students are encouraged to develop intercultural awareness that includes a study of their own traditions and history. All students take a foreign language to promote effective global communication. Students’ intellectual and social development is combined with a strong skills program around five common themes that are embedded across academic subjects referred to as the Areas of Interaction: approaches to learning; community service; health and social education; environment.
Yonkers Middle School technologies are used as a tool to support literacy, critical thinking, and New York State and Yonkers Learning Standards Library contains a computer research center to support in-depth and creative instruction. The children are actively involved in extensive, hands on projects requiring the use of state of the art technology; enabling them to become productive citizens of an ever changing global society. Research-based best practices are used in reading, the writing process, mathematics, science and social studies. Reading, writing and mathematics are taught in extended blocks of time to practice and apply skills.
