School 17 local community continues to supports programs such as the local library, local churches, and community service organizations. The community spirit has promoted a sense of commitment to the school district, which serves as a community center and a source of pride for all, including senior citizens and other local residents. There is a shared sense of the significance of local history, the importance of families, and the involvement of people of all ages in the community and the schools.

School 17 children are actively involved in extensive, hands on projects requiring the use of state of the art technology; enabling them to become productive citizens of an ever changing global society. Research-based best practices are used in reading, the writing process, mathematics, science and social studies. Reading, writing and mathematics are taught in extended blocks of time to practice and apply skills.

School 17 teachers are decisively devoted to the emotional, academic and social development of each individual child. The purpose of this school is to nurture each student's unique potential, enabling them to become life long learners. Literacy is at the heart of all programs and activities emphasizing written and spoken language, mathematics and the arts in a literature-based format across all areas of the curriculum.
