Burr Intermediate School is home to third, fourth, and fifth graders that live in the Commack Union Free School District. Burr Intermediate School along with Sawmill Intermediate School is the only two schools in the district that provide a quality education for students in these grades. The idea of dividing these students into their own school is to aid in providing the older students a better one on one education while preparing them for the road ahead into middle school and then off to high school. This type of separation helps with the transitional phase that is often very present in the middle high school phase whereas, the change is more gradual and more beneficial to the students.
Burr Intermediate School is committed to providing a quality education that will allow each student to develop their potential while excelling at their level of ability. The schools missions statements explains their concept by stating they provide a friendly, safe, and academically enriching environment so every student will grow their individual abilities and potential. They strive to offer every student all the necessary tools to aid in the individual development as well as academically. Students not only learn from books but also develop self-esteem and respect for themselves and others.
