Big Flats School is located at 543 Maple Street Big Flats, NY. This school is located in Chemung County and provides education for grades PK through 4 and it is part of the Horseheads Central School District. The Village of Horseheads was incorporated in May 1837 as "Fairport" in recognition of the prominent role played by the community in the operation of the Chemung Canal. The name of Fairport lasted only eight years when residents elected to change the name back to Horseheads.

Big Flats Elementary School has a pilot full-day pre-kindergarten program based on a developmental approach to learning. It is center-based and promotes the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth of each child. Big Flats School works to promote school readiness, independence, self-esteem and self-confidence. First grade is based on a developmental approach to learning. We promote the physical, social, emotional and intellectual growth of each child, as well as self-esteem and self-confidence.

The second grade program is based on a differentiated instructional approach to learning. Third grade is a transition time between the primary grades and the intermediate grades. Students in third grade assume responsibility for completing homework and class assignments in a timely manner as they acquire skills and strategies that help them work independently. Fourth grade works at Geometry, problem-solving, multiplication/division, fractions, decimals, and measurement. Reads a variety of different types of books, and works on many other studies.
