Scarsdale Schools

Scarsdale Union Free School District endorses efforts to develop students’ minds and spirits and, so, to inspire in them a love of learning. This attempt to restore balance in a field increasingly driven by metrics has resulted in varied initiatives aimed at a deep, rich education. Among these is work to involve students in the interdependent world around them, to reemphasize the arts and to connect them with other areas of study, to engage students in areas of their interest, to identify and replicate learning experiences they’ve found memorable, to differentiate teaching approaches, to encourage creative and independent thought.

Scarsdale Union Free School District adheres to the idea that the purpose of an education is to enable people to make a positive difference. This commitment is evident among other things in a Green Schools initiative to reduce the district’s carbon footprint, in school service and extra-curricular activities, and in volunteer public service. Throughout their over 200 year history, the Scarsdale Public Schools have in different ways and more than once influenced education beyond the borders of one small community. Perhaps in the long run, their most important contribution will have been to demonstrate the excellence that is possible when community, parents, children, and teachers share a common sense of purpose and a desire to achieve the unusual.
