Port Washington Schools

Port Washington Union Free School District technology program centers on the use of open-ended tools. Open-ended tools can be used in a variety of ways in a wide range of subjects. A good tool should have a low entry level and a high ceiling. A tool should be sufficiently intuitive and simple to use that it can be introduced to students at the lowest grade levels or to teachers with little or no computer experience. At the same time the tool should be able to be used in an increasingly complex manner, as the demands of the students and teachers become more sophisticated.

Port Washington Union Free School students are using open-ended flexible tools include markers, paints, typewriters, calculators, cameras and so on. In the computing world the most common open-ended tool is the word processor. Other computer tools include paint programs, hypermedia programs, programming languages, computerized simulations, electronic atlases, encyclopedias and other reference tools and communication tools, including the Internet.
