Somers Middle School academically is one of the few middle schools in the area that continues to offer a separate reading period on a daily basis. Students in grades six through eight have a full eighty minutes devoted to English and reading every day. They offer an accelerated mathematics course on every grade level for those students who qualify and also offer an accelerated earth science course in grade eight. In every class at every grade level, they emphasize our district’s philosophy that all students can learn, and we provide the necessary support to make that possible.
It is not uncommon to walk the halls of the middle school and see students engaged in Socratic seminar, debate, or a variety of other rigorous classroom activities. Like any good middle school, the staff attempt to provide students with a small school experience despite our growing enrollment. There are three teams at each grade level with between 80 and 100 students on a team. On each team there is English, math, science, social studies, and reading teacher, as well as a special education teacher. These teachers meet daily to plan, helping to provide for ease of communication between team members, and encouraging the type of interdisciplinary study that helps students make connections in their learning.
