P.S. 17 Henry David Thoreau School serves grades PK-5 at 28-37 29Th Street Long Island City, NY. This public school is ruled and regulated by District #30 whom strives to set high standards of education for its students. The school applies common philosophies set forth by the school community which is to provide students a sound environment for educational excellence that will develop the skills, attitudes, knowledge and values to become contributing members of society. New York educators encourage individual excellence by students of all ages so that they may gain a lifelong enthusiasm for learning and work.

The teachers make every effort to incorporate literacy learning in all areas of learning: social studies, science, math, health, physical education, and the arts. Parents with children attending this public School enjoy the, caring, dedicated teachers, and the desire of the school for parent involvement. The school applies common philosophies set forth by the school community which is to provide students a sound environment for educational excellence that will develop the skills, attitudes, knowledge and values to become contributing members of society.

Officials work to ensure the curriculum is continually being reviewed, evaluated, and adjusted to meet the needs of students. Additionally, staff analyzes state and local test results as a means of changing curriculum and instruction. Technology integration and activities that provide opportunities for problem solving, students at every grade level gradually become accountable for their own learning.
