Prospect Elementary School is located at 300 Prospect Avenue Salamanca, NY. Education is provided for grades Pre-kindergarten through 2nd for the community of Salamanca in Cattaraugus County. This Elementary School was named as one of the “Schools of Distinction” by the Western New York Regional School Support for its performance in the Reading First program. The NYS Education Department has provided Prospect Elementary School a three year grant to back and show support for teaching grades kindergarten through three to learn to read. The teachers monitor student’s advancements in reading skills in five areas.
These include phonemic awareness and the ability to hear sounds in words. Next is word study how students perform with recognizing the relationship between the sounds that letters make and the letters in print. Fluency is observed to see the student’s ability to read smoothly and with expression. Finally Vocabulary, the student’s use of words and comprehension for their ability to understand what is read.
