New School for Leadership and Journalism is made up of students who share a common experience of immigrating and need to learn the language and culture of the USA. Teachers are organized into teams that develop thematically based courses of study. Teams are given both the freedom and responsibility to design instruction for a small group of students and to promote their linguistic, cognitive and social progress. All teachers consider themselves teachers of language as well as content. New School teaching strategies are based on fundamental building blocks, designed to help them become independent and mature. These blocks support good personal traits like; gaining independence, becoming problem solvers, being good members of a community, and studying and learning in groups or by themselves.
