Martin Avenue Elementary School has established a positive, supportive social climate, with meticulous attention to anti-bullying initiatives. This is an absolute requirement for a comfortable, productive learning environment. They have revitalized our district’s long-standing Peace works program and created a peaceful playground and levels of behavior program built around principles of respect, responsible choices, and productive use of recess time. They use a practical social skills curriculum, skill streaming, and they promote peer mediation while enforcing the New York State project save legislation for safe and secure schools. Martin Avenue reading program incorporates a balanced literacy approach that includes the following components: read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, literature study, and independent reading. A wide range of literary genres and other materials are used, and instruction varies from full class to small groups to individualized work.
