John F. Kennedy High School provides an ideal learning environment for its students and is known for its outstanding academic programs and extra-curricular activities. The school recently ranked 69th in the top 100 high schools in the country in terms of students taking AP courses. The median overall average among students is approximately 87. Students participate and have done well in various academic competitions. The Kennedy Cougars are one of the top teams in sports that range from track to wrestling.

John F. Kennedy High School is one of three high schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District. Students zoned for this school live in southern parts of Bellmore and Merrick. As a district, Bellmore-Merrick ranks third in New York State in terms of graduates earning Regents diplomas. Among other things, the district is well known for its refusal to ban controversial books.
