Forest Lake School works toward the achievement of academic excellence and the lifelong love of learning, the enhancement of self-esteem and the building of character, respect and responsibility through the cooperation of home, school and community. In kindergarten, the language arts program develops beginning literacy skills using an integrated approach to language arts. Listening, speaking, reading and writing are emphasized. The program focuses on the development of oral vocabulary and language concepts, word analysis, comprehension and writing.
Students are read to daily from a variety of literary genres. Stories, fairy tales, folk tales, rhymes, poems and non-fiction books are used. Students learn to sequence stories. They demonstrate their ability to do this by drawing and writing. Students take part in shared readings of big books, dramatic and puppet play. They discuss stories read aloud. They learn how to follow directions in a large group, to share and to take turns
