Blythedale School is the only public school district in New York formed to educate a hospital population. Their students are inpatients and day hospital children and adolescents receiving rehabilitation and medical services at Blythedale Children’s Hospital. School-Wide Positive Behavior Support is a set of techniques and plans to increase the capacity of schools to reduce school disruption, and educate all students including students who are struggling with transitions and behavior. While many faculty and students may have assumptions of what is expected behavior, they never assume that everyone’s viewpoints are similar.
The staff is responsible for teaching and implementing appropriate behaviors within classroom instruction. The expected behavior is layed out in the PBIS matrices. This plan is implemented and reinforced at the beginning of each school year and is renewed every other month. Teachers may use their own discretion regarding the instruction of these behavioral expectations. Case managers are responsible for the review of this plan with the students. Teachers work to create and maintain a productive, safe environment in which all school community members have clear expectations and understandings of their role in the educational process.
