Wappingers Schools
Wappingers Central School District is located at 167 Myers Corners Rd, Suite 200 Wappingers Falls, NY. This public school district is the ninth largest central school district in New York State. It takes care of the educational needs of the community for grades K through 12 in Dutchess County, New York. The Village of Wappingers Falls received its name from the Wappani Indian tribe that was native to this area.
One half of the Village of Wappingers Falls is in the Town of Wappinger and the other half is in the Town of Poughkeepsie. Wappinger Creek forms the dividing line between the Towns of Poughkeepsie and Wappinger within the Village.
In the 1950's, the school district grew larger with the addition of the Stormville, Old Hopewell, East Fishkill Number 6, Gayhead and Shenendoah districts. At the same time there was considerable population growth. Consequently, five new elementary schools were built. They were James S. Evans, Fishkill Plains, Vassar Road, Brinckerhoff and Oak Grove.
Today this district has grown to include ten elementary schools: seven K-5, one K-3, one 4-6 and one K-6; two junior high schools: one 6-8 and one 7-8; and two 9-12 senior high schools. Central administrative offices are housed in Hollowbrook Park, Building 3, on Myers Corners Road in Wappingers Falls, as is the Central Media Department.
