South Colonie Schools
South Colonie Central School District received the Magna Award in 1999 and continues to show support for continuing education for adults through its General Equivalency Diploma program. The program features instruction by a certified teacher in the five areas of study to prepare for the GED exam. The course is free to people from age 18 or older that left school and want to earn their GED. South Colonie Central School District is ethnically diverse but has seen academic achievement improve dramatically through a rigorous curriculum. However the community was not aware that students were making key academic strides under unfavorable conditions and the growing student populace was putting a strain on school buildings.
South Colonie’s curricular, instructional and assessment vision includes a focus on higher levels of achievement for all students. These higher levels of achievement are defined in the New York State Standards and Frameworks. The district has placed particular focus on reading and communication skills, along with math. Technology is seen as a vehicle to support and extend student learning in these and all other areas of the curriculum. The use of technology tools will be focused on the development of higher level analyses, evaluation, communications, and presentation and decision-making skills.
