North Tonawanda is conveniently located between Buffalo and Niagara Falls at the junction of the historic Erie Barge Canal and the Niagara River. The Erie Barge Canal binds the city on the west by the Niagara River and on the south and east. The name "Tonawanda" was taken from the Tonawanda Creek, which flows into the Niagara River. "Tonawanda" is an Iroquois word meaning "swift running water."
