Kiryas Joel Village Schools

Kiryas Joel Village Union Free School District is located at 51 Forest Rd, Suite 315 Monroe, NY and it serves grades PK-10, 12 in Orange County. Monroe is located in southern Orange County in the State of New York. The Town encompasses three Villages: the Village of Harriman, the Village of Monroe and the Village of Kiryas Joel. A small portion of the Village of Harriman is in the Town of Woodbury. The Town of Monroe comprises 2.9% of Orange County’s land mass. As of the 2000 Census, Monroe has the largest population of any town in Orange County at 31,407.

Kiryas Joel Village Union Free School District is committed to nurturing, developing and igniting the hearts and minds of all students. Today's learners belong to a global community. For that reason, it is essential students learn about our increasingly interconnected world, and how to mature into productive, good-humored, creative, and responsible citizens of the United States and the world. It is our goal to develop students who believe in themselves, feel confident in their abilities and understand learning never ends. This school experience will be achieved through ongoing implementation of best practices engaging all learners in a safe environment, respecting diversity and involving parents and community.

Historically the Town was organized in 1799 as Chesekook (Cheesecock), named after the 1707 patent granted by Queen Anne, and was carved out of Cornwall. An act of Legislature passed in 1801 changed the name to Southfield, and in 1808 another act was passed giving the town its current name, Monroe in honor of the fifth President, James Monroe. The first town meeting was held in the home of John Weygant in April 1799. In 1864 'Old Monroe' was divided into three towns, Monroe, Highlands, and Southfields.
