Indian River Schools
Indian River Central School District is located at 32735-B County Route 29 Philadelphia, NY and provides quality education for grades PK through 12 for the community of Philadelphia, Antwerp, Calcium, Evans Mills, Theresa. The District is governed by a nine member Board of Education through the superintendent of schools and the Board of Education has developed the goals below for each of the students attending school at Indian River. The entire educational program is geared toward developing productive, successful citizens through a broad range of stimulating activities and educational programs.
The district is located in rural upstate New York where the main industry is agriculture. It centralized its educational operations in 1956, moving from the local school house model to a centralized district model where resources could be combined for better productivity. However, throughout this move the district has maintained its community roots. As a result of this effort, you will find local primary schools in villages, which serve as feeders to the centralized secondary schools.
The character of the district began to change in the mid-1980s with the announcement that the 10th Mountain Division would be stationed at neighboring Fort Drum. The ensuing construction effort, followed by the stationing of nearly 10,000 soldiers and their families on the post, altered the essential agricultural character of the area. As a result, the district now has both rural and suburban characteristics, with a wide variety of multi-cultural opportunities for the entire community.
