Baldwinsville Schools

Baldwinsville Central School District is located at 29 East Oneida Street Baldwinsville, NY providing education for grades K-12 in Onondaga County. The Baldwinsville School District has developed a three-year long-range professional development plan. The overall theme for the years 2004-2007 will be "Increasing Student Achievement". These three ingredients are: Providing a safe and orderly environment, infusing of technology into improving classroom instruction and Focusing on student achievement (all students, all sub groups) as outlined by district curriculum benchmarks and demonstrated by student learning.

All K-12 staff participates in professional development under these themes. Workshops and conference days provide time for discussion and training within and across departments and grade levels. The Baldwinsville Central School District is applying a new teaching method call Cognitive Coaching.

Cognitive Coaching is a peer coaching model that capitalizes upon and enhances cognitive processes. It is define as a set of strategies, a way of thinking and a way of working that invites self and others to shape and reshape their thinking and problem solving capacities. In other words, Cognitive Coaching enables people to modify their capacity to modify themselves. The metaphor of a stagecoach is one used to understand what a coach does - convey a valued person from where s/he is to where s/he wants to be.

Critical Thinking training targets instructional strategies that encourage students to formulate ideas, make logical inferences, achieve understanding and comprehension, evaluate view points, solve problems, etc. The goal is to engage students in higher level processing, thinking about their thinking in order to be more insightful, thorough, and evaluative.
