As excited as they are to get out of school in the beginning of the summer, most children are just as excited to return when fall nears.
They love the anticipation of getting new clothes and supplies and look forward to hitting the playground with their school pals. It is important to properly prepare your young children for the upcoming school year so they can stay excited and have a great first day. The most important thing that you can do with younger children is to make sure they are back on their school schedule ahead of time. Start getting them to bed at their school bedtime at least a week before the first day of school. this way when the first day rolls around they will be bright eyed and ready to go to school in the morning.
Often schools hand out the supply list ahead of time on the last day of the prior school year. If your school didn’t hand out a list ahead of time check their website or go to the school, often they post the list on either or a few weeks in advance of the new school year. Take your child out and let them help pick their supplies, backpack, lunch box and other related items. Have them all packed up and ready to go the night before the first day of school.
If this is your child’s first year at a new school or they are starting kindergarten they may have a certain level of anxiety about going somewhere unfamiliar. Practice your school routine a few times in the weeks before school starts if your child is starting kindergarten. Visit the school ahead of time for an orientation or tour for any child starting a new school. Let the teacher know about any anxieties your child is having so they can keep an eye out for distress.
